District 6 PIAA Committee Meeting

Minutes
Members present: Stanley Bem, Ray Wotkowski, Dean Rossi, Dave Heim, Vince Nedimyer, Alberta Ake, Judge Norman Krumenacker, Gary Jubas, Al D’Ambrosia, Carole Kakabar, Jules Dill, Mike Sakash, Don Hosterman, Kim Struble, Sue Werner, and Dave Crumrine.
Chairman Bem called the meeting to order. Minutes from the July 30, 2002 meeting were approved after a motion by Werner, seconded by Heim.
Communication entered into the record included the PIAA report of Soccer disqualifications, acknowledgement of Spaulding products for District golf, volleyball, football and tennis tournaments, a resignation from Charles Koren as a member of the state Oversight Committee, notification of $100 fine to be paid by Johnstown for not having a representative at the football rules meeting, a list of the 2002-03 PIAA State Rules Interpreters, and notice of October 5 PIAA District Football Tournament Directors Planning Meeting. Also accepted on a motion by Dill and a second by Hosterman was a letter from Bishop Guilfoyle Athletic Director Rick Hatch outlining an in-service program on eligibility requirements. (see attached)
Rossi moved, and Dill seconded approval of the District 6 Financial statement. Charles Koran reported by phone that three bids, two incomplete, were received for District 6 trophies. Struble moved and Werner seconded a motion to stay with the same company who guaranteed the same price for three years. After discussion regarding having the trophies on time, the motion was amended to enter into the contract for one year. Motion passed. The final financial report was an amended baseball tournament report, motion to accept by Sakash, second by Heim. Motion passed.
The included list of tournaments was approved after a motion by Wotkowski and second by Nedimyer. A list of foreign exchange students with J1 VISA were approved on a motion by Dill and second by Werner.
Eligibility hearings began with a request from Bishop Guilfoyle for a wavier of Article III, Section 3 attendance requirement. Attending were Athletic Director Rick Hatch, Volleyball Coach Tom Philbin, parents Mr. and Mrs. Jan Finkbeiner and student Shannon McGill. Following presentation of the case and committee discussion, Sakash moved and D’Ambrosia seconded a motion granting immediate eligibility. Motion passed unanimously.
Also heard was a request for eligibility for Samantha Reimer under Article III, Section 1. In attendance were John Wilson, Keith Junior High School Principal and parent Dave Reimer. After questioning and statements, Nedimyer and Ake were dismissed from discussion. Following discussion, Dill moved and D’Ambrosia seconded a motion to extend eligibility. By a majority decision, with the athletic directions and official’s representatives dissenting, the motion passed to grant eligibility.
The final hearing involved the eligibility of Paul Gregory Mihalick, Richland High School, under Article III, Transfer and Residence Section 8. Motion to grant eligibility made by Rossi, seconded by Hosterman. Motion passed unanimously.
A list of District 5 teams participating in District 6 tournaments was entered. The following District 6 fall tournament reports were given Cross Country-Don Hosterman, Football- Jules Dill-including a report that Bishop Guilfoyle had picked up game to replace Johnstown Vo-Tech after the August 12 deadline and his intention to buy tickets. Soccer-Al D’Ambrosia and Golf-Dean Rossi including a reminder that athletes from schools that do not sponsor a golf team are still eligible to qualify for the District Tournament. Boys who card 100 or lower, and girls who card lower than 120 in a dual match verified by a club pro are eligible.
In open discussion, Don Hosterman distributed information regarding new wrestling weigh-in requirements that will be discussed by athletic directors. Stanley Bem warned of the meningitis problem in Blairsville that may necessitate discussion should schools refuse to compete against such a school. Meeting adjourned at 5:49 p.m.
Next meeting of the PIAA is scheduled for Thursday, October 10, 2002, at Hollidaysburg Area High School at 4:00 PM.
