Regular Meeting of PIAA District 6 – April 15, 2003
Chairman Bem called the meeting of the District 6 Committee to order at 4:00 PM at the Scotch Valley Country Club. Present were: Stanley Bem, Ray Wotkowski, Dean Rossi, Al D’Ambrosia, Michael Sakash, Susan Werner, David Crumrine, Don Hosterman, Jules Dill, Vince Nedimyer, David Heim, Alberta Ake, and Kim Struble.
Approval of Minutes
Susan Werner and Vince Nedimyer approved the minutes of the March 26, 2003, on a motion.
Communications
David Heim reviewed disqualification reports of baseball and softball players. No action was taken.
Chairman Bem advised the Committee that the recommendations for umpires for baseball and softball championships and officials for volleyball and track and field championships are due to Board of Control by Friday, May 2, 2003.
Committee members were given copies of the revision to The Recruiting Rule and proposed Amendment to the Age Rule to review.
Chairman Bem received a letter from Jeff A. Baird, Principal, Penn Cambria High School, for a request in writing of the specific incidents of misconduct which took place during basketball playoffs. Chairman Bem will send a letter informing Mr. Baird that Michael Sakash will fax him detailed information regarding those incidents.
On a motion by Michael Sakash and Al D’Ambrosia the District 6 Committee accepted the actions taken by Edward Curry, Principal, Lewistown Area High School, regarding an incident that occurred at the conclusion of the Lewistown/North Catholic girls basketball game on March 15, 2003.
Financial Reports
On a motion by David Crumrine and Jules Dill, the District 6 Committee unanimously approved the March Financial Report.
Eligibility Hearings
On a motion by Michael Sakash and Albert D’Ambrosia, Joshua Michael McGuire, a Purchase Line High School student, is eligible for sports based on Waiver of Article III, Attendance, Section 3.
On a motion by David Crumrine and Susan Werner, Kyla Mihalick, a Bishop McCort High School student, is eligible for sports based on Article VI, Transfer and Residence, Section 10.
Foreign Exchange Eligibility Hearings
On a motion by Ray Wotkowski and Susan Werner, the following foreign exchange students were approved for athletics:
Kristina Boettcher Germany Huntingdon Area High School
Susanne Blohm Germany Huntingdon Area High School
Yuichi Fukazawa Japan Southern Huntingdon High School
Susanne Mahl Germany United High School
Erico Winckler Brazil Bald Eagle Area High School
Information
The District 6 Committee and the West Central Coaches are not participating in the Royal Publishing Program.
On a motion by Dean Rossi and Jules Dill, Chairman Bem received tentative approval for cooperative sports of boys’ and girls’ track and field between Ferndale High School and Greater Johnstown.
The District 6 Committee will be accepting bids for programs for basketball and football. All bids need to be received by June 1, 2003. Please send to Sherry Montgomery, 275 Montgomery Lane, Duncansville, PA 16635.
Any Junior High or Middle School Principal who would be interested in serving on the District 6 Committee can submit a letter of recommendation on school letter head to Sherry Montgomery at 275 Montgomery Lane, Duncansville, PA 16635 by June 1, 2003.
Annual Banquet/Meeting
The Annual Membership Meeting was held at the Scotch Valley Country Club in Hollidaysburg, PA. Chairman Bem welcomed guests and gave an introduction of District 6 Committee Members;. Father James Conrad gave the Invocation. Brad Cashman went over the proposed Amendments to PIAA Constitution, which included Waiver of Age Rule, Reclassification, Public Schools vs. Private Schools and Competitive Cheerleading. Member schools were encouraged to speak to Dean Rossi, Don Hosterman, Kim Struble, or Charles Koren regarding these items.
Westmont Hilltop Junior High and Conemaugh Valley High School were the recipients of the PIAA Sportsmanship Award.
The Election Committee consisted of representatives from Indian Valley, Glendale, and Mount Union High Schools. Representatives from Lewistown, Keith, and Bald Eagle High Schools served on the Amendments Ballot Committee.

The next meeting of the PIAA District 6 Committee will be held on Wednesday, May 7, 2003 at 4:00 PM at the Hollidaysburg Area High School, Hollidaysburg, PA.
Please note change of date. June meeting will be held on June 19, 2003, at 10:00 AM at the Cottage Restaurant in Ebensburg.
