Regular Meeting of PIAA District 6 – March 26, 2003

 

Call to Order of the March 26, 2003 Meeting

Chairman Bem called the meeting of the District 6 Committee to order at 4:00 PM at the Hollidaysburg Area High School. Present were: Stanley Bem, Ray Wotkowski, Dean Rossi, Al D’Ambrosia, Michael Sakash, Susan Werner, David Crumrine, Don Hosterman, Jules Dill, Vince Nedimyer, Kathy Getz, David Heim, Carole Kakabar, Alberta Ake, Gary Jubas, Charles Koren and Kim Struble.

 

Approval of Minutes

Dean Rossi and Vince Nedimyer approved the minutes of the February 9, 2002, on a motion.

 

Communications

Kathy Getz and David Heim reviewed disqualification reports of basketball and wrestling players. No action was taken.

 

Chairman Bem advised the Committee of the Advisory Committee Meetings, Don Hosterman will be the representative for the District 6 Committee.

 

Chairman Bem advised the Committee that Susan Werner was appointed by the PSBA to serve on the District 6 Committee for the term beginning July 1, 2003 until June 30, 2005.

 

 David Heim will be the male officials’ representative and Kathy Getz will serve as the female officials’ representative from July 1, 2003 until June 30, 2005.

 

Douglas G. Dyke, Secretary, Central State Track and Field League, wrote a letter to Chairman Bem noting their support of the Penns Valley Track Proposal.

 

Chairman Bem received a letter of complaint from Jeff A. Baird, Principal, Penn Cambria High School, regarding security and unruly fans during a boys’ basketball game.  On a motion by Ray Wotkowski and David Heim, Mr. Bem will address the concerns as related to him by District 6 Committee members. 

 

Chairman Bem received a letter from Rick Foust, Principal, Homer-Center High School, with notification of a rule violation of the PIAA Article XVI, concerning voluntary off-season practice sessions.  Motion made by Charles Koren and Jules Dill to accept the actions taken by Mr. Rick Foust.

 

David Heim, Officials’ Representative, received a letter from Ligonier Valley High School regarding a PIAA basketball official.  Carole Kakabar, Kathy Getz, and Gary Jubas will gather information from parties involved and make a recommendation to the Board of Control. 

 

Financial Reports

On a motion by Dean Rossi and Jules Dill, the District 6 Committee unanimously approved the February Financial Report. 

 

Michael Sakash and David Heim made a motion to accept the Swimming and Diving Financial Report given by Susan Werner.

 

Don Hosterman and Ray Wotkowski made a motion to accept the Basketball Financial Report given by Michael Sakash.

 

Dean Rossi and Carole Kakabar made a motion to accept the Team Dual Wrestling Financial Report given by Don Hosterman.

 

Ray Wotkowski and Jules Dill made a motion to reimburse presale tickets for basketball and hold the line on wrestling reimbursements, passed with a vote of 14 – 1.

 

Approval of Tournaments

The following tournament was approved on a motion by Kathy Getz and David Crumrine: Forest Hills Junior Varsity Baseball Tournament. 

               

Eligibility Hearings

On a motion by Don Hosterman and Albert D’Ambrosia, Nathan B. Powell, a Lewistown Area High School student, is eligible for sports based on Waiver, Article III, Attendance, Section 3.

 

Foreign Exchange Eligibility Hearings

On a motion by Vince Nedimeyer and Susan Werner, the following foreign exchange students were approved for athletics:

District 6 Election Procedures

Candidates for the Senior High Administrator are:       

Jules Dill, Central Cambria High School

David Crumrine, Central High School

Albert D’Ambrosia, Penns Valley High School

Michael Sakash, Bellwood-Antis High School

Vince Nedimyer, Altoona Area High School

Carole Kakabar, Blacklick Valley High School

 

Candidate for the Athletic Director’s Representative:

                Don Hosterman, Penns Valley High School

 

Information

There was a lengthy discussion among the Committee regarding the unruly behavior of fans, which violate the PIAA Sportsmanship Code.

 

Gray Jubas gave each Committee member some information regarding code of Ethics from the USA Hockey, Inc.  The District 6 Committee will keep this pamphlet on file for further use.

 

Charles Koren and Ray Wotkowski made a motion to permit Gary Jubas to become a voting member of the District 6 Committee, passed with a vote of 14 – 0.

 

Kathy Getz was given information to review on the Power Ranking for Volleyball.  She will report back to the Committee at the April 15th meeting.

 

Parent representatives will have voting rights on the District 6 Committees as of July 1, 2003.

 

Westmont Hilltop Junior High and Conemaugh Valley High School are the recipients of the PIAA Sportsmanship Award.  Each school will receive a banner and a senior athletic from Conemaugh Valley will receive a $1000 scholarship from the District 6 Committee.

 

The Next Meeting

The next meeting of the PIAA District 6 Committee will be held on Tuesday, April 15, 2003 at 4:00 PM at the Scotch Valley Country Club, Hollidaysburg, PA.  PIAA District 6 Annual Memberships Meeting and Dinner, 6:30 PM, at Scotch Valley Country Club.
