Regular Meeting of PIAA District 6 – February 12, 2003

 

 

Call to Order of the February 12, 2003 Meeting

Chairman Bem called the meeting of the District 6 Committee to order at 4:00 PM at the Hollidaysburg Area High School.  Present were:  Stanley Bem, Dean Rossi, Ray Wotkowski, Michael Sakash, David Crumrine, Jules Dill, Kathy Getz, Kim Struble, Charles Koren, Vince Nedimeyer, Don Hosterman, David Heim, Alberta Ake, Gary Jubas, and Norman Krumenacher.

 

Approval of Minutes

The Minutes of the January 9, 2003, meeting were approved on a motion by Jules Dill and Vince Nedimeyer.

 

Communications

David Heim and Kathy Getz reviewed basketball and wrestling player, coach or bench personnel disqualification forms; no action was taken by the Committee.

 

Chairman Bem received a letter from Thomas Shea, President, Gerald Spalding Basketball Chapter, expressing concerns over games situations in the area of crowd control.

 

A motion was made by Ray Wotkowski and David Crumrine to have the officials read the Expectation of Sportsmanship at each District 6 Playoff sporting event, with a 12-0 vote.

 

Chairman Bem received a letter advising him that Cubby F. Bair was removed from the list of registered sports officials.

 

Financial Reports

On a motion by Don Hosterman and David Heim, the Committee approved the January Financial Report.

 

Don Hosterman gave a Financial Report on the Wrestling Team Duals.  Mr. Hosterman was commended on a job well done.

 

Approval of Tournaments

The following tournaments were approved on a motion by Michael Sakash and Kim Struble:  Purchase Line Booster Club Volleyball Invitational, Purchase Line Lions Club Basketball Tournament, Somerset Lions Club Basketball Tournament, Forest Hills Cross Country Invitational, Hill Toppers Eagle Swimming Invitational, Conemaugh Valley All Sport Booster Jr. High Tournament, Lady Dragon Holiday Tournament, and Dragon Tip-off Tournament.

 

Foreign Exchange Eligibility Hearings

The following student has a J1 VISAS and is eligible to participate in sports at the following high schools:

                        Alvaro Callejos              Ecuador            West Branch

 

 

Eligibility Hearings

There were no eligibility hearings. 

 

District 6 Athletic Director’s Requests

The District 6 Athletic Director’s have requested a power ranking system for seeding for boys and girls volleyball tournaments.  Principals are requested to speak with their coaches and athletic directors to get their feedback regarding this.

 

A request for awards for 2nd place teams in the District 6 Tournaments was made. Charles Koren will check into the cost of doing this for team sports only and bring the information to the March meeting.

 

A letter was received from Scott R. Brooker with suggestions to improve track and field heat/flight qualifying periods.  Dean Rossi will speak with Tom Musselman, Track and Field Tournament Director, and bring back input for the March meeting.

 

A letter was received from Kevin Kodish, Girls’ Basketball Coach, Lewistown Area High School, regarding basketball classifications.  Vince Nedimyer and Charles Koren made a motion to table any discussion on this until a decision is made at the state level.

 

Report on the PIAA Board of Directors Meeting, January 25, 2003

 

Ø      Philadelphia Public High School, 37 senior high applications to be received and approved at the March 21st meeting.  District 12 will be formed on July 1, 2003.

Ø      Approved recommendation for girls and boys golf team championship.

Ø      Approved recommendation to follow NFHS Track and Field and Cross Country Competition Uniform Rule.

Ø      Referred recommendations from football and soccer to the Policy Review Committee on classification, enrollment percentage basis for entries into tournament and equal representation in playoffs.

 

The Next Meeting

The next meeting of the PIAA District 6 Committee will be held on Tuesday, March 25, 2003, at the Hollidaysburg Area Senior High School at 4:00 PM.
